Veebeam uses USB to link laptop with TV

Veebeam has launched the Veebeam SD and the Veebeam HD to link a laptop with the TV via a wireless connection. The Veebeam box plugs into the back of a standard or HD television. A USB antenna is then plugged into a USB slot on the computer. A wireless link is automatically made and the computer desktop is immediately reproduced on the TV screen. The system works with Windows 7 or Windows Vista, and with Mac OS X (10.5 or 10.6).

When the connection is switched on, the Veebeam is in Desktop mode, which displays the laptop screen cloned on the TV screen.  When you wish to stream downloaded movies or other video stuff from the computer you switch to Play-To mode, a dual facility which provides a higher quality picture to the TV but also allows the user to write emails, surf the web and use the computer in the normal way without interfering with the streamed video on the TV.

Wireless USB is the key to the link between computer and TV. WUSB offers greater bandwidth than classic WiFi, provides greater security and minimises interference, but it needs to be in line of sight.

Veebeam say that both the TV and the computer should therefore be in the same room, which is why a laptop would be the normal source. The system does not work with netbooks.

To make the Veebeam operational you must download software from the product website appropriate to your own equipment, whether Windows or Mac. The SD version comes with composite cable, while the HD model has an HDMI cable and can play 1080p High Definition movie files. Prices are £99 for the standard version, £139 for the HD model.
